Local Legends in Pungo
Pungo, Virginia is well known for a local legend named Grace Sherwood, who was accused of being a witch in the late 1600s. She was first accused in 1698 for placing a curse on a neighbor's cotton crop, which set off a string of allegations. Eventually, the Princess Anne County Government and the accusers determined that they would test Sherwood by ducking. Sherwood was tied cross-bound and thrown into the river at an area now known as Witch Duck Point, but she managed to free herself and swim to the top of the river.
Pungo's history also includes the Nimmon Church, which was constructed in 1791. The church was noted for Bishop Francis Asbury, who is reported to have visited and preached at the pulpit.
